Artist Statement
Fine Art – Oil and Mixed Media
As a fine artist working in oil and mixed media, my work is a culmination of years of observation, questioning, experience and practice. There is inspiration everywhere in daily life and I try to observe the normal and mundane from a new perspective, turning things upside down and sideways, breaking things down to their simplest components and putting them back together in new ways. A unique idea comes in a flash and often joins two or more disparate elements into a new concept which can distill the complex into something quite simple. It helps to try to view a challenge through a child’s eyes.
My work is an invitation to look deeper and discover what lies beneath. I am fascinated by textures and edges, finding ways to incorporate unexpected materials into my work. I also use brushes, pallete knives, and unique papers to add dimension, layers and depth which invite the viewer to look beyond the surface and discover what touches them and hopefully makes a connection.
Art is a means of communication between the viewer and the artist and it can open minds to innovative ideas. My years of working as a creative in a large advertising agency taught me how to communicate through my art to a broad and diverse audience.
I believe creativity breeds creativity. Being in a creative environment is contagious and stimulates the idea process.
Everyone is an artist. What changes is the canvas and the medium. It could be music, cooking, gardening, anything that uses conscious thought and creative imagination and expression. It is all about confidence, desire and a sense of wonder.
